We started by interviewing users and analyzing apps like Noonlight and bSafe. One thing stood out clearly: most safety apps felt too slow and detached during emergencies. Users said they wouldn't trust or remember how to use them in the moment. That became our core insight.
We built the app around five main features:
Protector Mode
A press-and-hold emergency button designed for speed and minimal thinking.Guardian Map
Live incident reporting and AI-guided safe route navigation.Alert Arsenal
Quick-access tools like fake calls, safety tips, and audio scan.Champion Circle
A volunteer and community-driven support network.Trackable Jewelry
A future-facing wearable concept for kids, elders, and runners.
I designed wireflows in Figma with a focus on one-handed use. Every screen followed a minimal pattern system using the Preline UI Kit, which helped us move fast and stay consistent. The UI was meant to calm people, not startle them. So I used soft gradients, large type, and bold calls to action.
Motion was critical to communicating urgency. I used Figma and After Effects to prototype micro-interactions for SOS triggers, transitions, and real-time alerts. These gave our testers a more realistic sense of how the app would behave under stress.
User testing with students and professionals revealed that certain flows still required too much thinking. We simplified the emergency interaction and reduced visual clutter to make decisions easier under pressure.
By the end, we had a polished prototype that showed how real-time safety tools and community response could work together. Communicare was selected as a finalist in the 2025 NYBPC and received strong feedback for its clarity, calm design, and emotional awareness. This project also helped establish the design system we’ll use in future MVP development, including wearable safety features and AI-guided support.

Process
We began by interviewing users and analyzing competitors like Noonlight and bSafe. The biggest takeaway: existing safety apps often feel slow or detached during real emergencies. We translated these insights into five core features—Protector Mode, Guardian Map, Alert Arsenal, Champion Circle, and future-facing Trackable Jewelry.
I designed mobile-first wireflows and prototypes in Figma, ensuring every core interaction was simple, quick, and possible with one hand. We built the UI with the Preline UI Kit to stay consistent and move fast. The visual style balanced urgency with calm: muted gradients, bold CTAs, and legible type.
Motion design played a key role in communicating alerts and transitions. I created micro-interactions in Figma and After Effects, simulating features like live SOS activation and button animations. Usability testing with students and professionals led to key changes—such as simplifying the emergency hold action and reducing cognitive load during high-stress moments.
Outcome
We developed a polished prototype that demonstrated real-time safety flows and community response tools. Communicare was selected as a finalist in the 2025 NY Business Plan Competition and received strong feedback for its emotionally intelligent design and impact-driven approach. The project set a solid design system foundation and is now positioned for MVP development, with future integration of wearable tech and AI safety tools.
